That is a tough one.
Bring a live cd of Ubuntu or Knoppix or something, and show him what
it can do out of box.
Explain to him that when changes are wanted/needed to an app, you
don't have to pay for it; just let the developers know, and they'll
usually help if your not a programmer yourself.
Open source usually provides for expandability. Applications you'd
typically use can be used traditionally without half the hassle,
things like that.
