Message-ID: This month's SLLUG Daytime meeting will be held this Wednesday, August 12 from 11:30am-1pm at BetaLoft SLC 357 W 200 S, Suite 201, Salt Lake City, UT, 84101 We have a great presentation lined up for you all! Here's the details: Infrastructure Renaissance Open source is at the forefront of an evolving ecosystem of tools and processes for building more adaptable and maintainable computational infrastructure. Virtualization and network booting tools speed up and simplify the process of provisioning. Configuration management tools provide policy based service descriptions which collapse the complexity of scaling. Monitoring solutions provide feedback which potentially drive provisioning and configuration. For organizations to fully leverage these tools is often as much a social engineering problem as a technical one. This talk is about building computational infrastructure with the tools, and processes that can help maximize the benefits. Andrew Shafer is a Co-founder of Reductive Labs Inc., helping organizations build more flexible and scalable systems through better tools and processes with the Open Source system management framework, Puppet?. He brings with him a background in computational science, embedded Linux development, web frameworks and Agile methods. Currently, Andrew is devoted to AR?TA (arxta.net, watch the video). Andrew has been an Open Source user and advocate since the late 90s. His two sons think he is pretty cool. ---------------------------------------------- I wanted to mention also, that I learned about Puppet training for folks in two places this month. Thanks to everyone who came to hear my talk. I know it wasn't a polished presentation but there are some very interesting Open Source tools and technologies which enable even more interesting workflows. I hope you all got something out of it. For anyone interested in or building web infrastructure, we have a small group that meets once a month to discuss architecture, tools and process tips and tricks that might be beneficial. http://groups.google.com/group/veloslc Also here is John Allspaw and Paul Hammond talking about deploys and dev/ops at flickr that you might find beneficial. http://blip.tv/file/2284377 I also mentioned Ignite Salt Lake in the beginning. Clint is going to talk about Open Source, but there are lots of other presentations and a Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock tournament that anyone can enter. Ignite is free and great fun. http://www.ignitesaltlake.com/ignite/index.cfm/rock-paper-scissors-lizard-spock/ I also mentioned my company is doing a Puppet training at the end of the month. Puppet is the leader in Open Source datacenter automation. Puppet is managing infrastructure at Google, Digg, Twitter, NYSE, Fedora, RedHat and Stanford. The framework was designed by a sysadmin for sysadmins and can really collapse some of the complexity of system management. In openSUSE, the ahci and pata_amd drivers were compiled as modules, allowing me to control the order in which they are loaded (pata_amd first because the boot device is not sata). In Ubuntu, they are compiled into the kernel itself, and ahci likes to load first making my four sata raid disks sda-sdd and my boot/root device sde. Now, functionality-wise, it's the same because I've worked around it with GRUB and fstab and what not, but it just bothers me that what used to be sda is now sde and there's no way (that I know of) to switch it back. So, here's my question: Is there any way (aside from compiling my own kernel or going back to openSUSE) that I can control which driver gets loaded first when it's compiled as part of the kernel (ie, with a kernel parameter at boot or some such)? Not answering your intended question I guess, but can you use LABEL= notation in /etc/fstab or UUID= notation, so it doesn't matter what order they get loaded in? Or are you using LVM for any of your mounted volumes? Those don't care what order drivers are loaded in either. -KW From matthew at azza.com Thu Aug 13 15:39:55 2009 From: matthew at azza.com (Matthew Hatch) Date: Thu Aug 13 15:53:32 2009 Subject: [sllug-members]: Storage drivers in Ubuntu Server 9.04 In-Reply-To: <1250198738.2804.10.camel@nc6320.kobran.org> References: <4A8476D8.7070608@azza.com> <1250198738.2804.10.camel@nc6320.kobran.org> Message-ID: <7BE65660-0D8F-4D83-AA44-E12238A7C647@azza.com> On Aug 13, 2009, at 3:25 PM, Knight Walker wrote: > On Thu, 2009-08-13 at 14:26 -0600, Matthew Hatch wrote: >> Hello all, >> >> So I decided to give Ubuntu a shot on my server, and so far >> everything >> is working as it was under openSUSE 11.1 with the exception of one >> thing. Assume you have a machine running SLES 9 or 10. The CPU has 4 cores. You have an application that has 4 threads (using pthreads but not MPI). With the default settings which scenario is true? A: Each thread will run on it's own core. B: 2 threads will run on 2 cores leaving 2 cores unused C: All 4 threads will run on a single core leaving 3 cores unused D: It is demand based an unknowable, but linux will try to spread the load as evenly as possible. I've been watching a real world program and I know what IS happening is scenario C and then when new apps are loaded then those apps each use a core, but I've been told by different people in the past that A and/or D are what's supposed to be happening. Can anyone answer the question about what is expected behavior and point me in the direction of where to find the answer in the future? Thanks in advance!
