All three have their "pro" services and I'll turn over the account that is associated with them to the buyer as well. They are cool little AP's I just don't have any use for them right now. I've also got the serial to usb option that they offered at one time for development. The AP's run linux but I don't remember what flavor it is (OpenWRT?). They provide a seemless mesh technology so only one AP needs to have an actual physical connection, makes it real easy to extend your network. All are about the size of a deck of playing cards. 1 Apple G4 Xserve (I know it's not linux but can run it if you really want to) - $400 obo. SPECS: 1U Rack Mountable dual 1.33ghz G4 PowerPC 2GB RAM (maxed) 4 - 180GB HD 1 - copper FC card 10/100 NIC built in 10/100/1000 PCI NIC CDROM I've got OS X Server (10.5.3) loaded but the license will not be included. It's a gorgeous server (if you like that sort of thing) I just don't have room for a rack right now. If anyone is interested I can get pictures but don't have any right now. Message-ID: I am wondering if anyone knows of a good web-based manager to control KVM based virtual machines. I will be redeploying a server of mine shortly with Ubuntu 8.04 Server Edition or Ubuntu 8.04 JeOS Edition with the sole purpose of hosting virtual machines using KVM. The server has a nice Core 2 Duo with the vmx (Hardware Virtualization) CPU flag and I want to take advantage of KVM's hardware virtualization on the CPU. To make it a bit easier on myself I want a web-based application similar to the provided by VMware Server 2.0[1] or even Linode[2] (I know it was built in house) to deploy/monitor/control the Virtual Machines since I so not plan on running X on the server. I have searched and searched Google and found several of note. The first would be oVirt[3], which fits the bill perfectly, however it is only compiled for FC9 and the other is Proxmox[4] which is an entire distrubution based off debian. I understand they finally hired a guy to port it all over. So perhaps in a year or so. Looking forward to it with great anticipation. I'm also messing around with Virtual Box instead of using VMware for my testing. It's pretty impressive. I've had a great deal of success with it. I'm glad I made the switch from Windows and I can't see myself ever going back again. The file /etc/sysconfig/iptables contains rules that will automatically be processed (as long as the 'iptables' init service is started) at boot time. You can use /usr/bin/system-config-securitylevel to establish a basic firewall configuration which will be written into /etc/sysconfig/iptables. You can then edit the contents of that file to, say, add new rules, or modify or delete the preconfigured rules. When you're finished, simply run '/sbin/service iptables restart' and your new rules will be loaded. Make sure the iptables service is set to run at boot-time by using system-config-securitylevel or by running '/sbin/chkconfig iptables on'. Note: All of the above commands must be done with super-user privileges. -- Doran L. Barton - Linux, Perl, Web, good fun, and more! "When passenger of foot heave in sight, tootle the horn. Add all the comments you want. Reload it to test by running "service iptables restart". If you're paranoid about it getting changed, "chattr +i /etc/sysconfig/iptables" when you're not working with it. My suggestion would be to have a copy of the iptables file with your copious comments. Maybe /etc/sysconfig/iptables.txt. -- Doran L. Barton - Linux, Perl, Web, good fun, and more! You can either create your own "service" in /etc/init.d by copying an already-existing file in there and modifying it for yourself, or you could just add it to the end of /etc/rc.local which is there for that purpose. If you do create your own "service", you can set it to startup by using chkconfig (eg, "chkconfig add myiptables") which will setup all the symbolic links in the rc.d directories for you. A > copiously commented and well documented script seems to be the easiest > way to do this. > > Or have I missed something? Unless you're modifying the firewall rules live (by using /sbin/iptables -A ... to modify the kernel firewall tables directly) then there really isn't a reason to do "service iptables save". Just edit /etc/sysconfig/iptables and then restart the service. That being said, what I have done in the past is write a Bash script that builds my firewall for me, then does a "service iptables save" to make the changes permanent. That way I can comment the script all I want, add loops, apply similar rules to different interfaces, and all sorts of wacky stuff that doesn't apply to home systems. It turns /etc/sysconfig/iptables into a pseudo-compiled ruleset that loads faster at system start than re-running a script. Finally, if you are set on using a script, you can put it anywhere you want to (I keep my custom scripts in /etc/rc.d along with everything else), but if you want it to start at boot, you'll want to add a reference to your script to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, which gets run at the tail end of the boot sequence. -KW From unum at unum5.org Tue Oct 7 13:11:42 2008 From: unum at unum5.org (Kyle Waters) Date: Tue Oct 7 12:38:06 2008 Subject: [sllug-members]: Scripting question In-Reply-To: <1223398808.3445.8.camel@nc6320.kobran.org> References: <6E6FDBA30C063741B032129B4F2CAFF906DFB766@MAIL2.csw.l-3com.com> <20081007151116.GB3730@xmission.com> <6E6FDBA30C063741B032129B4F2CAFF906DFB769@MAIL2.csw.l-3com.com> <1223398808.3445.8.camel@nc6320.kobran.org> Message-ID: <48EBB46E.7000100@unum5.org> shorewall++ kyle From bms at mscis.org Tue Oct 7 15:38:14 2008 From: bms at mscis.org (Brandon Stout) Date: Tue Oct 7 15:04:30 2008 Subject: [sllug-members]: Looking for work Message-ID: <48EBD6C6.7080307@mscis.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello everyone. Any extension will work as well. The requirements for them to be runnable are: 1. They must be executable (chmod +x scriptname) 2. The first line must contain the location of the script interpreter. It is almost always better to use built-in system functionality when it exists. Alternatives when no other built-in functionality exists: * Call the script from /etc/rc.local for scripts called once at boot up * See distro specific documentation on writing a custom init script (/etc/init.d) for starting and stopping services automatically From u235sentinel at gmail.com Tue Oct 7 16:57:48 2008 From: u235sentinel at gmail.com (u235sentinel) Date: Tue Oct 7 16:24:09 2008 Subject: [sllug-members]: Looking for work In-Reply-To: <48EBD6C6.7080307@mscis.org> References: <48EBD6C6.7080307@mscis.org> Message-ID: <48EBE96C.1080901@gmail.com> I recall seeing something along these lines in recent slug jobs posts. I think what I am going to do is the following: iptables-save > firewall-configure.sh Then edit this file to get my firewall configurations, comments, etc. like I want. Run firewall-configure.sh to set my firewall settings. Then, iptables-save to make it permanent. If I need to change anything, I can just edit firewall-configure.sh and then run it and save to make my changes. Does this sount like it would work? Good answer, Lonnie, but I would add two clarifications: It DOES matter where you put them, IF you want to execute them by typing the filename at the command prompt. If so, put it in a directory in the list in the PATH environment variable (type "echo $PATH" or "set|more" to see what that is. ALso, in my experience, /usr/local/sbin is more common for system one-off scripts run by root than /root/bin, and is more often by default in the PATH variable. You have one directory directive referring to a path within Apache and another referring to a real path on the hard drive. I don't think that's really the point, however. You might be able to get CSS files served out of the cg-bin directory okay, but that's not really its purpose, and by default I don't think it would work all that well. Simple answer: serve CSS from a different directory altogether. This is what I ended up with: Options FollowSymLinks ExecCGI AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all Options FollowSymLinks ExecCGI AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all That at least allows Apache to start, but it still doesn't resolve the 500 error for my _stylesheets/main.css request. I'll keep looking around for some more resources. I'm thinking that I just have the cgi-bin stuff not configured correctly in general. Also even if I put the stylesheet in the same directory and change my script to access it locally it still fails. I have: use strict; #================================================================ # DECLARATIONS #================================================================ use CGI::Pretty ":standard"; my $title = 'Experiment'; #================================================================ # PROGRAM PROPER #================================================================ print header(), start_html( -title => $title, -head => Link({ -rel => 'stylesheet', -type => 'text/css', -href => 'main.css' } ) ), end_html(); exit 0; and my directory structure is: /cgi-bin/ /cgi-bin/index.pl /cgi-bin/main.css As to whether or not Symlinks matter on Windows, I think that they do for Apache. That's actually a pretty standard configuration, although I don't know if it's effective on Windows. The "Directory /" stanza does refer to a real path on the filesystem: it's there as a safety net to prevent Apache from serving up files outside of the paths that you explicitly define in other Directory stanzas. That's why it has "Order deny, allow" and "Deny from all". I'm not sure why the cgi-bin directory is also set up as "Deny from all" -- I suspect it's a misconfiguration, although perhaps ScriptAlias'd directories don't require access to be granted in Directory stanzas (but it's been a while since I've touched an Apache config file, so I don't know if this is true). I don't think I've ever seen a configuration with ExecCGI turned on for /, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to me. > I don't think that's really the point, however. Simple answer: serve CSS from a different directory > altogether. I concur, especially if the cgi-bin directory is set up with ScriptAlias (as is common). It's probably also worth following up the error reported in the error_log file: On Mon, Oct 13, 2008 at 3:27:53PM -0600, Nathan Lane wrote: > [Mon Oct 13 15:26:37 2008] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] script not found or unable to stat: C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/cgi-bin/Experiment/_stylesheets/main.css, referer: http://localhost/cgi-bin/Experiment/index.pl Is that the correct path on the filesystem? If not, then either the path is wrong in the script or the web server is not configured correctly. If Apache has to dereference shortcuts, then I doubt it will work (shortcuts don't behave quite as transparently as symlinks do), and if cgi-bin is a ScriptAlias directory, then it won't work, period (although that would result in a 5xx error, if I remember correctly). -- William Aoki waoki@waoki.org KD7YAF From nathamberlane at gmail.com Tue Oct 14 13:07:28 2008 From: nathamberlane at gmail.com (Nathan Lane) Date: Tue Oct 14 12:34:07 2008 Subject: [sllug-members]: Perl, CGI and stylesheets In-Reply-To: <20081014184340.GA8334@waoki.org> References: <9afbd5b90810131403u6a2a7004md8cf63df2d0642e0@mail.gmail.com> <7f2da9a80810131411u6d2c7e63j126c903fcebba130@mail.gmail.com> <9afbd5b90810131417x19ddb4cbs51c1a81a2cef8d3a@mail.gmail.com> <59f6b3a40810131420s38e5edbbt4b57b7a86a8eecf9@mail.gmail.com> <9afbd5b90810131427y178ea53n36493317a561cacf@mail.gmail.com> <7f2da9a80810131432u20d32b79j6d58dff5ac21da20@mail.gmail.com> <9afbd5b90810131449r44537656jb523c555551429ab@mail.gmail.com> <429579db0810131503m5aab5d09gc4374b50d1a5bb4d@mail.gmail.com> <20081014184340.GA8334@waoki.org> Message-ID: <9afbd5b90810141207t1ca23e42l1f038d6b806a563a@mail.gmail.com> Can any of you recommend a good online or offline book that might get me going in CGI programming with Apache and Perl better? This seems a good opportunity to raise the issue of switching from Windows to Linux. Are there Departments at the U who have switched? If so, what is your setup, and what are the budgetary implications of this? Hans. Hans G. Support for these on GNU/Linux is mostly absent, although there are some tools that provide possibly comparable features, like OpenOffice.org and GIMP. A solution that we are just now implementing for one of our administrative staff is a Mac Intel box that runs Mac OS X as its default system, but also has VMware with Windows XP as well, so that she can deal with Microsoft-specific document and file formats that are otherwise unusable on the Mac. The same idea would work on GNU/Linux, and Windows runs quite efficiently on VMware on GNU/Linux. For some, but by no means all, applications from Windows, you can run them on recent releases of wine on GNU/Linux. Adobe Acrobat 9 runs usably this way, and the wine site has a list of commercial software that is known to work well on wine. I use Windows applications so seldom that I've not needed to investigate whether the Microsoft Office suite works well, or even at all, on wine. Here's a example of the DOS shell command-line environment in wine on one of our GNU/Linux boxes: % wineconsole --backend=curses cmd Z:\home\1009\sy\beebe>dir c:\tmp Volume in drive C is Volume Serial Number is 0000-0000 Directory of C:\tmp 9/16/2008 6:07 PM . 9/16/2008 5:05 PM .. 5/28/2008 7:22 PM 194,243,710 new-mathcw.pdf 9/16/2008 5:06 PM wine-test 10/18/2008 10:19 PM wine-test-2 1 file 194,243,710 bytes 4 directories 2,275,409,920 bytes free Z:\home\1009\sy\beebe>dir z:\tmp Volume in drive Z is Volume Serial Number is 0000-0000 Directory of Z:\tmp 10/20/2008 6:00 PM . 10/15/2008 2:44 PM .. 10/2/2008 3:49 PM .font-unix 10/2/2008 3:48 PM .ICE-unix ... 10/16/2008 2:17 PM 1210_sun_studio_12 8/9/2008 2:12 PM 12976_sun_studio_12 10/20/2008 9:16 AM 67,181 48fca0bb82808 10/20/2008 9:16 AM 67,181 48fca0bbb7de1 ... Also, Adobe has Adobe Reader 8 for Linux, which I have been using for a couple of months with no glitches. You can select your Linux installer from their website: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html I am running Kubuntu 7.10, and I have had zero problems finding replacements for any Windows software I would have otherwise been using. Synaptic is fantastic for finding what you need, and other well known open source vendors have gotten far, far better about installers. The only features that are missing from some open source programs are really obscure functions that will never come up in daily usage, and then generally only in highly specialized software that would make the transition to Linux unadvisable to begin with. Even in those cases, VMWare or WINE may still allow the use of Linux, depending on the Windows software. It may sound a bit fanatical, but when contemplating a move away from Windows, I would advise looking into moving away from as much Windows software as possible. There may not be a statistical program for Linux that supports the fractal regressive Baysian statistical model that was developed. In that case, a single Windows machine with RDP may be necessary, or testing with VMWare. Very few common computer tasks these days are not irreplacable with a Linux solution. I mean, we are here to promote Linux, right? Not some hybrid Linux/Windows Frankenstein's monster? :) j/k ----- Original Message ---- For some, but by no means all, applications from Windows, you can run them on recent releases of wine on GNU/Linux. Will you need to come up with replacements for Visio? SAS? SPSS? Custom economics software written in Visual Basic? Responding with a list here may yield some good alternatives. Are there Linux/Unix tools that you use currently, and are they tied to a specific distribution? Are your users comfortable with Linux and willing/capable to switch over. Do you have the support expertise to help with this transition? I've worked with enough professors to know that they do not like to be mandated on what platforms and tools they can use. Some just had to have Vista because it was new and cool looking. Most of your computers probably have Window's license keys affixed, which could continue in use, even if you drop your M$ service contracts. You probably just used a site license for windows and M$ office, though I don't know if the university maintains a campus wide agreement (which would have to be cheaper/more efficient than obtaining them by department). If you are maintaining contracts with M$, telling them that you are looking into Linux may even bargain them into a cheaper contract, so you may have to be firm in your resolve about the switch. You may also need to hire more students in support positions, but that can be a win-win proposition if you have competent administrator who can find talented students and produce experienced linux admins. This can be a really positive change if you work with a few experienced technical people and several open minded users. It could also backfire if it is implemented poorly. Glad to hear it is working out so well. In the case of a specific application like this, were I to be consulting, ;) I would probably advise keeping a Windows machine or two around just for that application, depending on the number of people that have to use it at one time. If it is the kind of thing that most of the shop would have to use for the majority of a day, then we are back to square one. I would assume a graphics intensive program like that would not work well virtualized, but I have had little opportunity to try a setup like that. On the other hand, this would be a good setup for the reverse case: You could run Windows primarily for after effects, and virtualize the Linux session for everything else. MokaFive has a trial version that works well, and is set up with Kubuntu for certain, and a number of other Linux OSs, and other applications. http://www.mokafive.com/index.php I don't know how much a license goes for, but it may even be possible to set up a session for After Effects that would work as well as VMWare for a limited use scenario. So here goes: Mailing list: udbug@googlegroups.com alternatively, http://groups.google.com/group/udbug for the Google Groups version IRC: Freenode, #udbug Website: http://udbug.org/ As has been said, we don't yet meet regularly, and when we do it's often in conjunction with other groups, because we're not that big and most of our membership is involved in other groups as well, so we'd like not to overload them with meetings. Looking at the membership page on the google groups list, though, we might have enough members to merit a regular meeting all on our own pretty soon... Thanks again for letting us come. OVO is an agent based monitoring system. Agents are pushed to servers and the Management Server does not have to poll the managed nodes for information. Templates are pushed out to the managed node and the agent executes the requests as per schedule defined in the template. Then the agent reports to the management server. This architecture allows OVO to scale better than Nagios or GroundWork. I've implemented and managed both, HP products and a few of the open source monitoring solutions, there are advantages and disadvantages in both. However, the advantage of open source is just that. It's open source and you can add or modify the features to meet your needs. The HP products and other vendor solutions you are pretty much stuck with the feature sets that they offer. OVO runs on UNIX flavors such as HPUX and Solaris. HP also has a Windows version of OVO. I don't believe it runs on Linux. This is mostly an issue with playing games, but can also be an issue for several other programs. I'm not sure, but video editing seems to be a program that might expect a nice video card. You could consider a dual-boot situation if Jahsaka isn't quite there feature-wise or the virtual machine doesn't work well enough. On Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 7:44 PM, u235sentinel wrote: > Ok. Message-ID: <4901E4F8.7000000@mecworks.com> Hey all, I have a couple UPSs that need new batteries (again!). The thing is that I just replaced them less than a year ago with new sealed lead-acid batteries from Batteries Plus in Orem (by Circuit City). I was surprised at how short lived they have been - much shorter than the original batteries. I am wondering if there's a better vendor or if I just got a bad set. Where do you buy your replacement batteries for you UPSes? Is there a brand that you feel is higher quality than others? I've always heard good things about Batteries Plus. But, as with all things "reconditioned," you're likely to get a less-than-great product from time to time. If you really have only had it for a year, take it back to them and see what they say. It's possible they'll give you a new battery for free or at a discount. There was some discussion about UPS battery replacements on the PLUG list a couple months ago. I ended up ordering 8 batteries from a mail-order place that someone recommended from there... http://gotbatteries.com/ Shipping was relatively cheap and the batteries have been humming along (not literally) nicely. -- Doran L. The trouble has varied between out-of- the-box script bugs, kernel problems, and ATI driver issues. This is actually the first release where I have not had to tweak things to even get hibernate to work - suspend never really did. It used to be that people would just set up a directory called cgi-bin/ and drop their executables in it. Nowadays, a lot of distros ship with cgi-bin/ set up as an alias, rather than a publicly-accessable directory. That's pretty much what I was getting at. Are you using Apache to serve just one site, or do you have it set up to use virtual hosts? I'm guessing that you're just serving one site right now, which means that your configuration is probably pretty spread out. If you're intent on using the cgi-bin/ directory, see if there is an alias set up for it, and make sure it's configured correctly. I would still set up a separate css/ directory instead personally, to keep everything organized by function, but maybe that's just me. > As to whether or not Symlinks matter on Windows, I think that they do for > Apache.
