Any VLC command line experts here?

I want to record to a file via cron calling a bash script.
This has been working for years via streamripper but
the source has now changed from mp3 stream to asf.

Apparently streamripper doesn't handle asf streams.
However, vlc does.

What I want to know how to do is to keep the vlc GUI
player from showing up on the screen and how to
cause VLC to convert the .ASF file to MP3 or OOG
creating a file during that process.

I have been reading the VLC man pages but I am finding
it turse (what else is new) and over my head.
