This means you are running -vo x11 which is typically slower than -vo
xv. Regardless the answer to your question is -zoom:
mplayer -zoom
If you want this to be the default behavior always (which I would
think you would) you can place:
zoom = yes
In your mplayer.conf (probably /etc/mplayer.conf globally or
~/.mplayer/mplayer.conf) file.
