[sllug-members]: Re: sllug-members Digest, Vol 41, Issue 1

I was corresponding with Dr Black and a West Jordan City Council member until a couple of months ago, when the City Council member was not re-elected, and I read in the article that Dr Black and another founding member of UTOPIA had left. I was formulating ideas the other day to get the word out, since their take rate was less than half what they expected. The article did have a good point, however, that until some of the medium to larger businesses start installing UTOPIA, it is going to continue to limp along. In order to catch their attention, many of the smaller businesses will need to start using UTOPIA to get a competitive advantage. After that, the larger businesses will start to take notice.

I can try to get some contacts within UTOPIA and see about providing a list of City Council members for the SLC Metro and Provo area, if anyone is interested in a letter writing campaign.

There is a large front-page story in the Salt Lake Tribune on Monday
31-Dec-2007 about financial difficulties in the UTOPIA Project, due
both to delayed federal government funding, and a customer base that
is 1/3 the size of that predicted.

The story is online here:

P.S. UTOPIA = Utah Telecommunications Open Infrastructure Agency, a
project aimed at bringing fiber optic Internet access to homes
and businesses in subscribing communities in the state of Utah.

Like most things in the SL Trib, it's very biased. Esp considering
SLC has no stake in Utopia anyways.
If you read the reporters previous you will see a pretty serious slant
in reporting at least on tech items, in the favor of incumbent
providers.
There was very little if any attempt to explain the construction
delays, or what exactly is meant by cost overruns.

All in all we can solve the Utopia problem, simply by getting the word
out. Very few people I've talked to have ever heard of it, or believe
it is outside their price range (even though they pay $100 month for
Cable triple play).

If you have friends and/or family explain to them what a fantastic
deal Utopia service actually is.
Might not hurt to mention that right now you can get 50MBs with 500GB
XFR for only $50/month with a $54 one time install fee. More details
are here.. http://www.xmission.com/utopia/index.html

Sincerely,
Steve
