Yup. I've found the same thing. Plus, it helps the development team, too.

I used Visio quite a bit in the past, mostly before Microsoft bought it. It
is (or was, I haven't used the last couple of versions) an excellent tool,
easy to use and worked beautifully.

I mostly use dia on Linux for many projects over the years (including
*abusing* the UML templates for DB diagrams). I've also used Kivio (part of
KOffice) a couple of times, but I think dia give you better control over
lines and layout.
A good friend of mine uses OmniGraffle [
http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnigraffle/ ] on MacOS X. I've only
used it a couple of times on his box (I do not have a Mac), but I *really*
liked it. The diagrams he has produced are beautiful and he make changes
very quickly and painlessly. It's not open source, but It think it's about
the best one out there.
