I can be completely off whack here, but as I understand, no you can't
just drop the old / on the new /

However, you can make backups of all the personal areas (things you
have changed etc) like /home or /usr

and put them back where they belong once the change is done.

However, I am sure you will still run into a few things there are will
trip you up, as you noted hardware changes etc.
