democracy: a political system in which the supreme power lies in a
body of citizens who can elect people to represent them

In a broad definition a republic is a state or country that is led by
people who do not base their political power on any principle beyond
the control of the people living in that state or country.

So lets get technical, but I think we're both correct!  No digressing!  :)
