There has been a lot of discussion about UTOPIA on this list so I
thought I would share this. The state had enacted a ban on allowing
cities to bond for telecommunications infrastructure, that ban has
expired. They are discussing reinstating the ban. The following is an
email sent out by Pete Ashdown on his UTPolitech mailing list. I know
one member of the committee (my representative) Tim Cosgrove supports
UTOPIA I do not know about the others. Please keep Pete's advice in
mind when contacting anyone.

The subcommittee on "Competition and Privatization" will be meeting
September 26th at 9:00 AM in Capitol W125 to discuss municipal fiber in
the context of UTOPIA and iProvo. There are some very vocal opponents
to municipal networks running these meetings and it is important that
the public show their support for advanced infrastructure and level
playing fields for data services. Comcast and Qwest issued a real
snow-job in the last meeting stating, "I told you so" even though the
business plan for UTOPIA is on track. They would like nothing more than
government to continue to protect their business domains from open and
level competition.

If you plan to speak in the public time of the meeting, please be
concise, respectful and factual. The most compelling testimony comes
from business owners who have seen their businesses advance due to
municipal fiber, or be held back by the resident telephony or cable
providers.
