Well, I started them at about age one using a couple simple SDL programs
that I wrote (and need to release). At that point it was just mashing on
the keyboard. At age 4 I allowed my oldest to go to pbskids.org so he
could play some of the games. He really didn't use it that much, which
is why I haven't turned it back on for him.
I will second the recommendation of GCompris. Definitely use the admin
tool to disable the games that are above their level (and periodically
review them). My kids also love Tux Paint and Planet Penguin Racer (nee
Tux Racer).
Just as a final thought about web filtering, I turned on ident so that
Squid could know which user was using the Internet. I then based the
usage classes on the user's group (kids, parents).
