Jeremy,
I've had good luck in the past with picking up refurbished Thinkpads
from various sources online. There's a very strong, thriving market in
refurbished Thinkpads, especially the 'T' series. Right now I'd look at
T40's (T40, T41, T42, T43, etc) because they were built very solidly and
on average have a much longer lifespan than most PC laptop. They're
also well loved by many linux users to boot, so compatibility isn't
usually an issue.
