[sllug-members]: slightly OT: domain name appraisals

There are several domain names associated with a non-profit venture I am running, that I would like to purchase.  They are currently owned by several other persons who have them parked and are not using them.  I can only conclude that they are speculating as all but one of them offer the domains for sale on the parked website.

What, if any, experience have you had with domain name appraisals?  

Are certified appraisals actually better than automated appraisals?  

Should I have them appraised before contacting the current owners?
