[sllug-members]: KDEINIT cannot launch anything!

Bingo! When I first log in, there are three magic cookies; when the 
problem happens, the hostname/unix:0 cookie is missing. Furthermore, it 
appears to happen after I ssh into that computer from my laptop.

You were dead right on both accounts, Stuart. Now I just need to figure 
out why ssh is removing that cookie. In the meantime, I can just leave a 
terminal open and re-merge the extracted cookie as needed.
