Run "xauth list" before and after X starts refusing to launch new
programs. I'm betting it's not getting "corrupted", merely changed.
Reset it back to the old value and you should be good to go.
Of course, then the next question will be: why is your .Xauthority
getting corrupted? I'm betting on an overly helpful su or login script.
