Hello Thankyou for responding I'm sorry I wasn't very specific. I have since loaded on ubuntu with the text install and the same happens I have tried fiddling around after pushing Ctrl-Alt-F1 but I didn't know enough to do anything I'm going to try what was suggested by Paul but I don't know how to extract the .etc.X11.xorg.conf file so like I said I'm very new to linux.
So here is all the information I can think of that might be of help to you about my system
Motherboard Intel 965plt
CPU Intel D 945 running @ stock 3.4ghz(both cores)
RAM 2 gigs
Video Card PowerColor x1600xt 256meg vram
Sound Card Sound Blaster Audigy 2zs gamer
Hard Drive 1 Western Digital 250 gig sata (Windows Media Center Partition)
Hard Drive 2 Seagate 320gig Sata (Ubuntu-Linux anything I can get to work Partition)
Cat Eye HD Tv Tuner
Ati theater Pro 550 tv tuner
Monitor Westinghouse 27inch LCD TV running at 1280 X 720 @75hz refresh rate (Connected via dvi no drivers)
2 dvd drives
That's pretty much it. One thing I tried was using the ubuntu graphical installer and choosing a low vga resolution which actually aloud me to see more before the screen blanked out but that's the only thing to report I see what I can do in telinit 3
