After the screen goes blank, wait a couple of seconds then press
Ctrl-Alt-F1 -- that will switch you to the first text console. You can
log in there as root. Then type telinit 3 -- this will take you to the
command line runmode. You should stay there until you sort out issues
between your graphics card and the X server. Actually, until you resolve
those issues you should disable graphical login -- edit /etc/inittab and
change id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault: -- this will prevent
your box from starting the X server on every reboot. You can still start
the X server from the command line using the startx command. You can
kill the X server using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. You can reboot using
Ctrl-Alt-Delete. As far as configuring your X server -- it would help if
you would post information about your graphics card, display, and your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file here so we can take a look at it.
This should get you started.
Paul.
