I'm looking for OSS advice on a security video camera project.
PROJECT:
Our condos need video security cameras. We have 6 buildings
surrounding a playground/common space, in turn surrounded by parking
and driveways. (See
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=copperfield+place,+magna,+UT+84044&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=18&ll=40.698023,-112.082857&spn=0.001973,0.005364&t=h&iwloc=addr
for google satellite of the area.)
I'm hoping for motion- or heat-activated cameras, wireless
transmission to the control computer, and hard drive stored video
capture of all areas. I'd like the video clips to auto-delete, oldest
first, after a certain amount of time, or when a hard drive quota has
been reached. Finally, I'd like any condo owner or tenant to be able
to access the videos via password-secured IP.
A friend in the IP/telecom business has discussed general setup and
hardware with me, but his expertise is in the Windoze arena. I'd
rather not shell out for a Micro$oft license, nor even more for some
proprietary, expensive, non-upgradeable camera monitoring software.
I'm most familiar with Debian and more recently Ubuntu, but SuSE is a
favourite RPM-based distro. I want something easily secured and easy
to update like apt-get.
PLEASE let me know if you have suggestions and experience in this kind
of project. Our homeowners association is cheap, but I think the
deterrent of video surveillance will save them money, and enable them
to charge damages to (ir)responsible parties when video isn't enough
deterrence. Not needing to pay for Micro$oft and video monitoring
proprietary software will help sell them on the idea, as long OSS
provides what we need.
