We moved from MRTG to Cacti. It works fairly well, but I can't say I
recommend it for more than a few hundred nodes. We've got almost 2000
hosts and almost 6000 RRDs. It has some problems, but it is getting by.
We're investigating OpenNMS as replacement. We really like the
auto-discovery feature and they claim to have installations with 80,000
hosts. It would also be really nice to consolidate Nagios and Cacti. I
haven't fully researched it yet so I can't say whether it will meet our
needs.
