You can use Thunderbird to use imap and get the folder offline as well.
This is how i do my personal email checking as well.
However at work I am restricted to using Outlook for e-mail, and I cannot connect it to anything other than the company's webserver. I can't run Thunderbird at work. Plus, I do not want to download any personal e-mail at work. I just want to be able to check my personal e-mail at home using my web browser at work. (Sorting through a couple hundred e-mails each night is bothersome; that's why I need procmail/spamassasin or equiv to reduce the load. Being able to browse my e-mail as it arrives will allow me to delete what isn't important, and keep what is.) I'll read and delete anything that isn't worth saving, and then download and reply to what's left when I get home in the evening.
