I've been working with my Dish DVR for some time and learned (from Dish) 
that the USB device is disabled until an external hard drive is 
connected.  I guess they don't understand USB very well but with that in 
mind, I don't think you're going to get very far with that port if they 
are locking it down somehow.

If there is a way to connect the USB / Firewire ports to a computer to 
pull down the shows I'd be interested in it.  So far I've had to play 
them to my Myth TV server in order to get them off the DVR.  Sucks but 
it works :D
