Not for X, and most distro's don't run a config check on X at boot time.
Thats one reason why switching between an ATI and an nVidia card can
be such a pain.
Interestingly enough they do probe the monitor each time if you set
the proper options, but you may not like the bit depth and refresh
rate you get :(
Nothing like 1600x1400 at 50hz interlaced on a 1024x768 monitor to
make you want a life time supply of dramamine.
On the other hand if it's an LCD the results are usually quite correct.
