Interesting question. I was wondering something similar, earlier - does
anyone know how to force a rerun of the hardware detection stuff Ubuntu runs
during the install?

Another thing - IIRC, Ubuntu just uses the Vesa driver by default, unless
that fails or you're using one of the proprietary drivers (someone correct
me if I'm wrong..). If thats the case, VESA should work for most cards made
within the last 10 years, out of the box.
