[sllug-members]: Live CD auto-detected and generated x.org config

Another question for the group....

I'm trying to help out some technically-challenged friends who live
far away by doing an install of Ubuntu for them on a computer they had
put away and weren't using because Windows was infected or something
(long story).

When I last saw them, I just took their hard drive with me, figuring it
wouldn't be too hard for them to get it running after I sent it back (I
tried to find a way to burn a CD and do the install for them right
there, but it was not to be -- even longer story)

Unfortunately, although I noted their monitor model, I neglected to note
what their video card type was (d'oh!), and I don't want to bother them
to try to read it off the physical card :-}

I had the idea that if I send them back a live CD along with their disk,
I could guide them through copying the xorg.conf auto-generated by the
live CD into their /etc in order to make sure the video is properly
configured when they boot up. But I've looked at the xorg.confs that
Knoppix and Kubuntu generate, and it's not obvious to me that these
would be appropriate to simply copy over and try to use. Not sure why I
think this... after all, that config is apparently working fine for the
live CD, but......

Am I worrying over nothing? Has anyone ever done anything like this
before? If it is in fact NOT a good idea to simply copy the live CD
config, then does anyone know of another way to accomplish this, such as
an existing utility that will do the detection and generation, that
could be run by hand off a live CD? I've googled around and found
something called kxgenerator, but haven't tried it and it really doesn't
look very mature (which may be why it's not included in the distros I've
looked at so far).

Thanks again (for the second time in one day :-)

Dave
