Thanks!  I think that's the route I'm going to try next.  I've
installed every codec known to man and it still doesn't work.  In
further looking at my browser plugins, it seems to be using totem
(which I didn't even know had a browser plugin!).  All the while I've
been thinking it was using mozplugger, which is just fine, but for
'ruling out the problem' I am going to give the mplayer plugin a
whirl.
