I've created slideshows like this with dvdslideshow and it does a pretty good 
job, in terms of output quality (better than iMovie, IMO).  As for ease of 
use, well, that's a matter of perspective.  You have to create a sort of 
script file that specifies the images, transitions, music, etc., and then it 
processes the script to create the video.

I created a little shell script to generate a dvdslideshow script from a 
directory of images, with random transitions.  With that as a baseline, I go 
back and manually add Ken Burns effects and music.  I find that I can 
actually put a slide show together in much less time than I can with iMovie 
on my wife's Mac, so I think the UI is quite good.  My wife thinks I'm nuts, 
though, and I'm sure she's far from the only one.
