I had some success with HandBrake:

Looks like they've done some work since last I was there.
I just used the CLI version; seems like once you knew the proper
incantation for iPod, things were very easy.
I never figured out how to do a scene index, so I'm stuck with breaking
DVDs into multiple files that must be played seperately, or living with
one huge unindexed video.
