I can confirm what Lamont says about a setup like this. I maintain
something similar at work and it performs quite well for many tens of
thousands of users. If you're particularly daring, you could use Active
Directory as your LDAP server, although I would highly recommend
OpenLDAP or Redhat Directory instead.

I've been hanging onto this email hoping to find time to write out a
simple solution, but it's looking doubtful. I can tell you with 100%
certainty it's possible to set this up with Exim. YMMV with others. If
you are interested in tackling Exim, let me know and I'll see what I can
pull together for you.
