Thanks for the advice.  I am not going to move parts  tonight.  Maybe a little closer to Christmas.  Stuart Jansen.  I did not get your attachment.

Why am I using Windows.  

I am downloading Gentoo Live CD.  My internal Windows based modem (which only runs in Windows) is clearly faster than the external, serial modem I use with Linux.  I do not know why the serial modem is slower. I am guessing it has something to do with the serial port rather than modem.  The download manager that I use with Windows 98 SE is a four thread download manager.  xwget does not appear to have that option.  Which translates that the download is much faster with Windows.  I am now at 89 percent.  

Six months ago I could not configure Thunderbird to use email with my ISP.  My ISP mail requires authentication.   Webmail is slow.  BTW.   I wonder we are about to see more security problems with Java.   What is there about this that I should already know?
