I have never heard of computer cables getting brittle.  I've worked with 
computers that are /very/ old; basically most parts outlive their 
usefulness.  Another recommendation I would make is installing the mobo 
first, as even in a large tower things can get crowded with the drives 
installed.  Really, as long as you're reasonably careful and static free, 
you'll find that computer parts are pretty resilient.
