I am working on that. I have a domain name (utah-sug.org) and server, but
still need to set up the site. But here a quick summary to your question.
Last night was the second meeting. The first one we did an overview and
discussion of what Snort was and what its current and future feature set
is/would be. Last night we just all got together and worked on getting snort
installed and configured in a VMware (on Debian). Both times we had around
18 people show up, with total unique visitors around 30. I would guess that
about 50% are first time Snort users, 25% have some knowledge, and 25% are
old hats.
The next meeting we are going to focus on placement, use, and optimization.
And the meeting after that will probably be rule writing. Beyond that ......
who knows. After these first few months I think we'll evolve into more of a
general OSS security group than snort specific, with snort being kinda our
flagship tool. Afterall, its always good to know what all those great tools
look like from an IDS perspective.
Feel free to come meet the group. Our next meeting will probably be 12/18/06.
We are trying to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, the night before
SLLUG. ;-)
