[sllug-members]: Setting up a ppp dial-in server

Hello,

I've recently been setting up a new Linux box for my grandparents to use
for their everyday needs. Because they don't have any internet access,
I have been trying to set up dial-in access to the machine so I can do
remote administration should anything go wrong.

I am having some issues getting it set up, however. I can dial in with
Minicom and login to mgetty, but whenever I try to log into an ppp
session, the modem disconnects and /var/log/messages says:

Nov 4 17:13:57 linux pppd[16669]: The remote system is required to
authenticate itself
Nov 4 17:13:57 linux pppd[16669]: but I couldn't find any suitable
secret (password) for it to use to do so.

I thought that when mgetty passed it off to pppd that it would also
handle the login, but it doesn't seem to be working. The only way I've
been able to get it working is to manually set my username and password
in the pap-secrets file.

So, my question is: Do I need to do anything special to make pppd
accept logins using the unix usernames/passwords?

Thanks!
