Shared hosting is often the most affordable way to go, especially if you're
just starting out. I recommend XMission. My company - Iodynamics - also hosts
sites, but most of our customers are using websites and applications we
developed. Oh, and we generally eschew PHP. :)

If you're doing e-commerce or anything else that might involve sensitive
data, I strongly recommend a dedicated solution whether it be a true
dedicated server or a virtual server. Xen-based solutions are coming into
being and from what I've seen, it's definitely the way to go if you don't
want to buy and maintain your own hardware.

If you're interested in purchasing, say, a 1U Linux server and need an outfit
to set it up and manage it for you, check us out at Iodynamics.com.
