[sllug-members]: Reset network statistics

I am running SLES 9.3. I am trying to find out if there is a
non-interruptive way to reset the NIC statistics shown by ifconfig.
Currently, when I run ifconfig, I get the following:
/sbin/ifconfig eth1
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet
[snip]
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:10828173 errors:659899 dropped:0 overruns:0
frame:0
TX packets:3354598 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:1133019835 (1080.5 Mb) TX bytes:696306834 (664.0
Mb)
Interrupt:21
There are obviously errors. They resulted from a network
misconfiguration, and I want to reset the stats. I know I can do this
by doing and "ifdown eth1" then "ifup eth1", but I want to know if there
is a way to reset this without bringing down the card. The stats are (I
believe) pulled from /proc/net/dev, but this is a read-only file that I
can't edit manually, even as root (probably with good reason).
Thanks
Steve
