Yes. Microsoft earned the hated of many by stifling innovation and
abusing customers, but if Microsoft hadn't done it someone else would
have. Imagine what Unix would have been like if AT&T hadn't been
muzzled. Imagine what Oracle as the primary mover and shaker would be
like. Simply put, corporatism would have created something similar to
Microsoft and something similar to Linux/OSS would have become
necessary.
