Yes. Another vote for Richard Stallman. Fed up with the proprietary
direction of ATT Unix, Richard envisioned creating an operating system
open to all, and free for all. He forsaw a world where everyone, not
just economically advantaged westerners, could benefit from technology.
He arguably led the creation of what is now thought of as the "Linux"
operating system (less the kernel). The creation of GPL, and the
continuing leadership of the free software movement make him the most
influential "open source" pioneer.
And I agree with you about emacs... Having programmed in TECO myself,
I know anyone who thought "I can write a new editor using this" has got
to be either a genius, or a little off their rocker... Stallmann is
both, but in a good way.
