I've had good luck ordering supermicro barebones servers from
Newegg.com. I usually have supermicro open in one tab with newegg
open in the other to make sure I get the right stuff (SATA, IDE, SCSI,
ECC, non-ECC, etc...). Just as a general rule I've found. If it says
P-4 it won't have ECC, if it says Xeon it will need Registered ECC.
The Supermicro boards I have had all need a pair of memory modules
(I've only worked with Xeon). Only giving it one will produce a
memory error on post.

What other brands do people around here go for? Who builds their own?

Shaun
