[sllug-members]: Hardware - IDE Controller

I have never been a hardware guy. Just enough to make the computer work. Any
idea where I can get a cheap IDE controller that will work with Debian?
Background:
I have just been given a couple 200GB IDE drives that I would like to put into
my Debian box, but I need another controller card to do it. Currently full with
two drives, DVD, & CDRW. I don't really need RAID support, but may look at going
that direction in the future.
What I've Tried:
I was also given a Promise FastTrack SX4000, which I can't get to work for the
life of me. The BIOS sees it just fine, and I can set up the raid, but linux
sees nothing. I am running the 2.6.18 kernel and tried to download their module
(which I think is for the 2.4 kernel), but when I modprobe or insmod it can't
find the module. (It is located in the
/lib/modules/2.6.18-3-k7/kernel/drivers/scsi/ folder)
Conclusion:
I would like to put these drives into the box, but can easily buy a couple
external enclosures and make them USB devices.
Side Topic:
What is the best way to find hardware that is supported by linux? Do I have to
go through the kernel?
Thanks!
Mike
