[sllug-members]: AMD processors and memory types

I'm looking for an understanding here....

Reading up on the differences between socket 939 and socket 940 CPUs
shows that one of the differences is that socket 940 memory controllers
require registered memory whereas socket 939 use unbuffered memory. I
have also read in places that socket 939 "requires" unbuffered memory.
If the latter is the case then why does my system, which is an Athlon 64
3200+ work with the registered memory I have installed (and recognize it
as such)?

On the other hand, if it is true that socket 939 CPUs can use either/or,
then why does the socket 940 memory controller have the advantage, being
it *requires* registered memory?

Couldn't find an authoritative answer on the web... May not even find
one here... :)

Jarom
