I've not yet seen anything in Debian/Ubuntu to make setting up X as nice
as Redhat's system-config-display, but with that you can easily just
select a generic CRT/LCD with the desired resolution (one that the
monitor is capable of). It also has a huge list of monitors, which even
had my old Nokia X774 listed...

PHP would need mod_php installed, the name of the packaged depends on
the distro your using of coarse, but I don't recall any other than maybe
gentoo that don't enable it as soon as you install mod_php. (and after
an apache restart)
Well... looks like I'm wrong, its Debian that doesn't seem to enable it
by default, found this how-to for Debian/Ubuntu on setting up a LAMP
server with PHP4.
