Well, the nice thing about Asterisk is that you don't need a 12-line
phone.  Any SIP or analog phone will work just fine.  As for the card
for the host, it all depends on what kind of phone connection you're
making to your Asterisk system.  For example, a Digium TDM11B card will
give you a port to plug an analog *phone* into (an FXS port), and a port
you can plug an analog phone *line* into (an FXO port).  It also has
room for two more modules, so buy buying more FXO or FXS modules, you
could support up to four analog devices from that card.  On the other
extreme, you can have a 4-port T1 card that can support up to 192
simultaneous calls.  In short, it just depends on what you're trying to
do.
